Estevan happy to host curling’s Canada Cup | 980 CJME Estevan happy to host curling’s Canada Cup Regina / 980 CJME December 05, 2018 05:06 pm The Canada Cup got underway in Estevan on Dec. 5, 2018. The winner gets a berth in the Olympic pre-trials and a share of a $140,000 pot. The biggest names in curling have descended on Estevan this week. The Home Hardware Canada Cup is underway in the Energy City and it’s brought with it the likes of Jennifer Jones, Rachel Homan, Brad Gushue and Kevin Koe. A total of eight women’s teams and seven men’s team will compete for a $140,000 purse, a spot at the Olympic pre-trials and a berth to a World Cup event. It’s an exciting event for Estevan, which has 200 volunteers involved in the operations, but more importantly, it’s providing an infusion of cash into a city that’s been struggling with the downturn in the energy sector. “It really helps our business in town — our hotels, restaurants, stores — they’re all so thankful that we can bring an event like this to our community,” said Mayor Roy Ludwig. Besides the obvious economic benefits, Ludwig says having the high-calibre curling in the city is a thrill for its residents and the people of Saskatchewan who come to take in the tournament. For those who are looking to cheer for the local rink, Matt Dunstone’s rink is competing in the event. Dunstone was part of the Laycock Rink that represented Saskatchewan at the Brier before the team split shortly after the Canadian championship. He now skips a team that includes Braeden Moskowy as the third, Catlin Schneider as the second and Dustin Kidby as the lead. Tickets are still available for the draws at Affinity Place. The tournament runs with the final happening on Sunday. ');
