But there is still one unsolved case from a decade ago that keeps Gary Giroux coming back to the crime scene. \r\n\r\nThe veteran detective says he still sometimes visits the parking lot where Oliver Martin and Dylan Ellis were gunned down back in June of 2008, hoping that something will help him find their killer.\r\n\r\nMartin, 25, and Ellis, 26, were sitting in a Range Rover at Richmond Street West and Walnut Avenue after watching a basketball game at a friend\u2019s home when a gunman approached and opened fire. Detectives were never able to determine a motive, and over a decade later, a suspect has never been named. \r\n\r\n\u201cI just want to see somebody held accountable,\u201d says Giroux.\r\n\r\nThe homicide detective will be retiring in a few weeks, bringing to an end an almost 40-year-long career with Toronto police \u2013 22 of which were spent in the homicide squad. \r\n\r\nGiroux calls those 22 years the high point of his career, but says the unsolved crimes are the lows that will stick with him. \r\n\r\n\u201cThey kind of nag at you, you know?\u201d\r\n\r\nAnother unsolved case that the veteran cop says weighs on him is the killing of Paulson Chellakudam and Suzette Augustin inside a travel agency near Jane St. and Wilson Ave. in 2004. \r\n\r\nAugustin walked into the agency where a knifepoint robbery was in progress, and was killed in what Giroux says was a very violent scene. \r\n\r\n\u201cAll she was doing was dropping off an envelope with a cheque inside and walked right into the middle of it,\u201d says Giroux. \u201cThat one really bothered me.\u201d\r\n\r\nThe Toronto police officer says he has handled over 200 homicide cases, and is proud of the fact that many ended in convictions, including the stabbing death of Nighisti Semret. \r\n\r\nSemret was walking home from a night shift at a downtown hotel on a rainy October morning in 2012 when she was attacked in a Cabbagetown laneway. \r\n\r\nThe mother of three was an immigrant from Eritrea. \r\n\r\n\u201cShe came here with very little to make a better life for herself,\u201d says Giroux. \u201cAnd unfortunately (was) killed in a very violent way by a coward who attacked her while she walked home by herself.\u201d\r\n\r\nAdonay Zekarias was later sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years. \r\n\r\n\u201cWe still don\u2019t definitively know why\u201d he did it, says Giroux. \r\n\r\nZekarias was also later found guilty of killing and dismembering his girlfriend, 28-year-old Rigat Ghirmay. \r\n\r\n<img src=\"https:\/\/toronto.citynews.ca\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/sites\/10\/2019\/01\/14\/giroux-presser-1024x602.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1931083\" \/>\r\n\r\nGiroux says many members of the Cabbagetown community reached out to thank him once they charged Zekarias. \u201cI think his apprehension gave a lot of people peace and comfort.\u201d\r\n\r\nGiroux handled several high-profile investigations over the years, including the task of looking into whether there was any criminality on the part of then-Toronto Mayor Rob Ford, or his office. \r\n\r\n\u201cI dealt with it in exactly the same way,\u201d as other investigations, says Giroux. \r\n\r\nThe officer says he concluded that, after hundreds of hours of surveillance and investigation with a team from the professional standards unit, Ford was \u201cconsorting with known and active criminals. These were people who were identified during [Project] Traveller as being violent members of the community who had victimized many people.\u201d \r\n\r\nBut the investigation did not reveal any actions on the part of Ford that warranted an arrest. \r\n\r\nAnother political drama Giroux found himself at the centre of was the mass arrests following the protests at the G20 summit in 2010. \r\n\r\nIt was \u201clike nothing that I had ever experienced before,\u201d says Giroux. Leading a task force, and working with an \u201coverwhelming amount\u201d of video evidence, Giroux says they laid hundreds of charges that he thinks \u201cdid the city proud.\u201d\r\n\r\nVancouver officials would later call him for advice after rioting broke out in their city after the Canucks lost the Stanley Cup final in 2011. \r\n\r\nGiroux will wind down his work in the coming weeks \u2013 fielding calls from the families of victims looking for case updates, making court appearances and passing on what he has learned to younger officers. \r\n\r\n\u201cStay positive,\u201d says Giroux. \u201cI tell them \u2018remember you\u2019ve got to go home to your families at the end of the day.\u2019\u201d\r\n\r\n\u201cIf you don\u2019t have that pillar at home, then you\u2019re going to be lost very quickly.\u201d\r\n\r\nGiroux credits his wife with keeping him grounded. \u201cI give her all the credit for that,\u201d he says. \r\n\r\nHired by Toronto police in 1979 when he was only two weeks out of high school, Giroux says he hasn\u2019t figured out what\u2019s next for him, but one thing is certain. \r\n\r\n\u201cIt\u2019ll certainly not involve anything on call. I can 100 per cent guarantee you that. I don\u2019t want to be yanked out in the middle of the night anymore.\u201d\r\n\r\nBut he adds, \u201cIt was a great run for me. The sick students<em>\u2013<\/em>all between six and 13 years old--said their heads were spinning and there was a funny smell.\r\n\r\nAn ambulance service spokesman said 35 children and eight adults complained of symptoms including dizziness and nausea Monday.\r\n\r\nOfficials believe this was the result of carbon monoxide poisoning and the building was evacuated. <p>Almost every song has a bit of jazz breathing through it. Jazz’s influence is apparent in various genres and style of music like bebop, blues, funk, soul, rock, R&B and country. It also draws inspiration from other styles of music. This year’s TD Toronto Jazz Festival speaks to both those elements.</p>
<p>“Jazz is influencing other artists, but also jazz is being influenced by other artists and art-forms,” said Josh Grossman, artistic director of the Toronto Downtown Jazz, which produces the annual TD Toronto Jazz Festival.</p>
<p>The scale of influence is apparent with this year’s festival, running June 20-29. The lineup includes artists whose tunes are flavoured with jazz, rooted in traditional jazz, and infused with other styles of music.</p>
<p>Grossman said he’s seeing jazz’s evolution more so with the younger generation of jazz musicians.</p>
<p>“They’re really absorbing all the music that’s happening around them and incorporating that into their jazz music, and what comes out of that is a very exciting hybrid — something that we really haven’t heard before — and it’s very forward moving for jazz as a genre,” he said.</p>
<p>This year’s event also brings together up-and-coming talent, established musicians, as well as veteran artists like Smokey Robinson, Mavis Staples, Dr. John, Willie Nelson, and Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, who continue to influence today’s generation.</p>
<p>The jazz festival began in 1987, and has grown to become Toronto’s largest music festival, with more than 1,500 musicians playing in more than 60 venues across the GTA. Several big names in music have also played at the festival — Miles Davis, Sarah Vaughan, Ray Charles, Diana Krall, Harry Connick Jr., and Oscar Peterson, to name a few.</p>
<p>While not everyone may be a jazz fan, the festival strives to present different styles of the genre and showcase its diversity to anyone who just embraces music.</p>
<p>“We’re really trying to present the best musicians in the world on our stages. And I think that really resonates with people,” Grossman said.</p>
<p>“It’s rare that you get this kind of concentration of really fantastic musicians all happening in the same place at the same time,” he added.</p>
<p>Some of this year’s highlights include marquee shows at Massey Hall, Harbourfront Centre and Nathan Phillips Square. Willie Nelson and Family will open the jazz festival at Massey Hall on June 20.</p>
<p>Smokey Robinson, and Martha Reeves and the Vandellas take the mainstage at Nathan Phillips Square on Friday — the show is free courtesy of the festival’s “free-for-all-Friday” feature, which extends to all of the official festival venues across the city.</p>
<p>“That’s a really exciting way to present a whole variety of jazz at no charge, and it’s a great way for people to just go and explore the various venues around the city that present jazz during the festival and on a year-round basis,” Grossman said.</p>
<p>Grossman also said he is looking forward to the shows at the <a href="http://torontojazz.com/content/jazz-lake-enwave-theatre" target="_blank">Harbourfront Centre’s Enwave Theatre</a> — featuring vocalist Gregory Porter and pianist Fred Hersch — the Horseshoe Tavern and the Jazz Bistro.</p>
<p>“We’ve also got a really fun series at the Horseshoe Tavern, which spans the ages of jazz,” he said.</p>
<p>Blues musician James Cotton and multi-genre virtuoso Robert Glasper Experiment are two of the artists performing at the tavern. <strong><a href="http://torontojazz.com/venue/horseshoe-tavern" target="_blank">Click here</a></strong> for a list of shows.</p>
<p>Musicians and event-goers alike will also experience the city’s newest jazz venue, the Jazz Bistro — once home to the landmark Top o’ the Senator. <p>Some of the other highlights this year include free shows at the Shops at Don Mills, the Distillery District, as well as afternoon performances at Nathan Phillips Square — the latter featuring Big Band music.</p>
<p>The free music series and smaller venue shows allows newcomers to jazz to explore its diversity, and also appeals to those who want to try out the genre.</p>
<p>“[To] explore what jazz is all about today and who are some of the great musicians that are performing it,” Grossman said.</p>
