Truman Burlington Ribfest Weekend This weekend Burlington will host and welcome over 150,000 visitors to our downtown and waterfront. It is a great event with lots of fun for the whole family. Ribfest is also an event that significantly benefits our community. Service Clubs Serving our Community Burlington is very fortunate to have many active service clubs including Burlington Lions Club, Optimist Club, Civitan Club, the Knights of Columbus, Kinsmen, the Junior League of Hamilton-Burlington, not to mention four Rotary clubs. These service clubs provide ways to get involved in community events and also provide vital services to our city. . Meeting the needs of all members of our community is important to our success and often, it is the service clubs, that help to fill the void for many in need. I’d like to thank Premier Kathleen Wynne for choosing to visit Burlington as part of her summer tour of Ontario. My experience as a Rotarian has been very influential in my life and I encourage everyone to get involved in some way. Service clubs of all types are always looking for new members. Involvement in one of these organizations is a wonderful way to give back to your community. Canada’s Largest Ribfest This weekend Burlington will host “Canada’s Largest Ribfest” at Spencer Smith Park. Burlington Post: 18th Ribfest returning to Spencer Smith Park This award-winning event is hosted by the Rotary Club of Burlington-Lakeshore – my home club. Ribfest started in 1996, and in its first year made $800. Last year, in its 18 th year, Ribfest raised approximately $330,000 with proceeds donated to many community programs and organizations including academic scholarships, donations to local food banks, and Joseph Brant Hospital. To date Canada’s Largest Ribfest has raised over $2.6 million dollars for the community. Ribfest is one of the biggest community events in Burlington. Each year during Ribfest weekend we attract over 150,000 visitors and this an opportunity for us to showcase our downtown, our beautiful waterfront, and our community pride. In 2011, Festivals and Events Ontario awarded Canada’s Largest Ribfest the “Best Greening of a Festival or Event” award as a result of the excellence in waste diversion and for using 100% recyclable materials for the event. All proceeds from Ribfest are used to support charitable causes locally, nationally and internationally. Locally, Burlington’s Rotary Clubs contribute to supportive housing, food banks and have committed to raising $1 million for the expansion and redevelopment of Joseph Brant Hospital. This is accomplished with the support of the community at fundraising events like Ribfest, the Lobster Fiesta, the Amazing Bed Race, and Lakeside a la Carte. Rotary International Nationally, Rotary provides leadership development programs for high school students and young adults. This year Rotary started the first entrepreneur competition (a Dragon’s Den-inspired event) to showcase young entrepreneurs and high school students. Internationally, Rotary has been involved in programs to around the world, have coordinated the donation of firetrucks to communities in need, and many other international initiatives. Rotary is just one example of the many active service clubs that do so much for our community. Service clubs are a vital element of a vibrant city and community spirit. Rotary and all service clubs believe in the philosophy of “service above self.” I am always amazed by the tremendous teamwork and camaraderie of the dedicated volunteers who work so hard to delivery community events like Ribfest this weekend. I look forward to working at Ribfest this weekend and hope to see you there! Thank you to all members of Burlington’s service clubs for your hard work in making Burlington a great place to live, work, and play.
